Lorazepam, commonly known by the brand name Ativan, is a medication that is primarily used to treat anxiety disorders. It belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, which act on the central nervous system to produce a calming effect. In addition to its primary use in treating anxiety, Ativan is also prescribed to treat insomnia and nausea, conditions often experienced by cancer patients.
Ativan enhances the effects of a natural chemical in the body (GABA), which contributes to its effectiveness in reducing nervous tension. This mechanism makes it not only suitable for those experiencing anxiety but also useful in helping cancer patients manage the symptoms and side effects associated with their disease and treatment. For example, cancer treatments such as chemotherapy can cause nausea and vomiting, whereas Ativan can be used to relieve these unwanted side effects
